COMMEMORATION

Polish Memorial

11 11 2016

On the 11th of November 2016 a Polish delegation which consisted of Officer Cadets from the Tadeusz Kościuszko Military Academy of Land Forces in Wrocław and civilian Students who are currently on their Erasmus+ internship at the Theresan Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt, visited the former concentration camp in Mauthausen.

The date was not randomly chosen because on this day in 1918 Poland regained its independence after 123 years of slavery (1795-1918). The 11th of November is a very special day for every Pole, especially for soldiers and other servicemen. The Polish delegation decided to visit the former concentration camp “Kozentrationslager Mauthausen” to commemorate the sacrifice paid by previous generations and their effort in fighting for their freedom and independence because of the historical background of this place. It is a sign of continuous struggle and fight for life and freedom. What is also important, almost 35,000 Poles were murdered there – among them many soldiers and officers.

When placing flowers at the Polish memorial statue, which reminds of the murdered Poles. The Officer Cadets and civilian students gave them honours and commemorated their deaths.
